Introduce us to you and your brand!
I started up my design company, Tammie Norries, last year during the first lockdown through which I design colourful Scottish homeware and gifts based on Scottish wildlife. All my illustrations are hand drawn and then worked on digitally. I feature some of the more well know animals and plants such as the tammie norries (puffins), highland deer, Scottish thistle and heather, but also the more unusual and rare ones such as the Scottish Wildcat, Capercaillie, midgie and bog myrtle.

How has your brand developed since you began?
My first design was ‘A Rabble of Bees’ as my neighbour’s daughter owns ‘The Scottish Bee Company’ and they were looking for gifts to sell. I started with tea towels and then greetings cards. I now have 10 designs and have expanded the range to velvet cushion covers, notebooks and pocket mirrors.
How did you find out about SDX? And what made you apply to sell with us?
I had visited the store in Glasgow and loved looking at variety of fabulous work made by all the artist and designers.
What would you consider to be the most challenging aspect about being a working artist? Keeping my sales up through the quieter times of the year.

What do you consider to be your most popular product?
My notebook are now proving to be my most popular products.
What piece are you the proudest of?
My velvet cushion covers.
Do you have any past accomplishments you wish to share?
I was featured on and won Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas Best Toy competition in 2018 making an interactive leather robot.
What have you found to be the most challenging aspect to your business since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020?
Setting up my business through the first covid lockdown gave me the time at home to focus on the work, while home-schooling, but also the difficulties of all the shops being shut.

How have you spent your time during lockdowns?
Starting up and developing my business and trying to home-school, build dens, camp in the garden, walk, run and generally keep fit and stay sane.
Have you discovered any new hobbies or passions in the last year?
I am loving growingannanas HIIT workouts and strava to keep me motivated with my running.
How do you think shopping and retail may change after the pandemic ends?
I think a lot more people have got use to shopping on-line but I still think many people enjoy wondering around the shops.
How did SDX being closed affect your business?
I only started selling with SDX just before Christmas but I imagine I have lost sales.
What do you hope to gain from working with SDX going forward?
A huge amount of sales, more recognition for my work and to feel part of a community of other artists and designers.

If you could share just one piece of advice to aspiring artists/designers who want to make a living from their creative talents, what would you tell them?
Definitely just to have the confidence to go for it.
Thank you to Frances for participating in our blog questionnaire. You can find her work at both our Glasgow & Edinburgh shops.
