Why did you choose to be an artist/designer?
I always wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I never wanted to be anything else
What medium do you work in?
Pencil, pen and watercolour mostly
What is your background, have you always been an artist/designer?
Yes. I studied illustration at Duncan of Jordanstone Colllege of Art,Dundee . I worked at DC Thomson for a year, then mostly been freelance since then
How has your practice changed over time?
For years I worked for newspapers. I was cartoonist of the Edinburgh Evening News from 1999-2015 and also the Sunday Post. Now I no longer work for the press and I'm pursuing my interest in drawing and painting and some cartoons
How and when did you started creating?
Ever since I can remember. Primary school age
How would you describe your creations?
Humour plays I large part in my work. I love to hear people laughing when they look at my work
What inspires you?
When I did political cartoons, it was a desire to mock those in positions of power. Now I'm inspired by drawing people, buildings and flowers
Where do you show / sell your art?
Through SDX obviously and my online shop. Art fairs pre-covid and sometimes through art galleries
Do you think art can have an impact in the local community?
Yes, I worked at a community arts project on a council estate in south London in the 1980s.
Who are your biggest influences?
Dudley D.Watkins, Ronald Searle, Hogarth, Giles, Bud Neill, Piranesi, Goya, George Grosz
Which current art do you think is having an impact in the world right now?
A Cuban-American artist called Edel Rodriguez has done some great anti-Trump artwork
What difference has working with SDX made to your business?
It's given me a regular income and a incentive to produce new work
